In the Name of the Father tells the true story of Gerry Conlon. Gerry is a petty thief in the divided Belfast of the 1970s, and his greatest interests are getting drunk and partying, much to the dismay of his quiet and frail father Giuseppe (Pete Postlethwaite). When Gerry angers the IRA, his father sends him to England, where his excesses put him in the wrong place at the wrong time. He is innocent, but is forced to confess to terrorist bombings and is sentenced to life in prison.
The innocent Giuseppe is also arrested and imprisoned, and in prison Gerry slowly discovers that his fathers apparent fragility hides an incredible strength and wisdom. Together with a very committed defense attorney played by Oscar winner Emma Thompson, Gerry is determined to have his innocence proven, clear his fathers name and uncover the truth behind one of the most shameful events in law enforcement in recent times.
