NOT BATH, BRISTOL OR GLOUCESTER
This fairytale City near Wales with one of the UKs best high streets.
This hidden gem is less crowded than similar towns and cities which get the headlines.
Located not far from the Welsh border, this pretty city is perfect for a summer day trip but its not Bath, Gloucester or Bristol. The City is known for its medieval architecture, relaxed atmosphere and scenic river and has been called a hidden gem.
The city is small, so its perfect for a couple of days away, and this is a photo and not a painting.
Situated in the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Hereford is full of green spaces and a lesser-known place to spend a weekend, offering a perfect blend of city and countryside. Its high street is filled with independent shops and a good range of places to eat. The Bookshop is an all-day bistro serving brunch and dinner, with mains including Hereford sirloin steak and wild mushroom and lentil lasagne. The city is especially famous for its cider and even has a museum devoted to the drink. (with the Travelodge Hotel located next door, good if youve had one too many).
Youll find homeware and homemade cakes at Fox and Mabel in the Old Market to outdoor gear at Trekkit, while the Butter Market will make you feel like youre stepping back in time as you buy pasties and comics to sit and enjoy under the clock in the old market hall.
Alongside the high street, one must-visit spot is Hereford Cathedral, home to a community which has worked and worshipped together continuously for over 1,300 years.
The present building includes examples of architecture, stained glass and art from all periods, which can be further explored with our knowledgeable guides and volunteers.
A visitor on TripAdvisor said: What an imposing building from both inside and out. Huge pillars, vaulted ceilings and beautiful stained glass windows. Really a sight to behold.
The Old Black and White House, a perfectly preserved timber-framed Jacobean house, in Hereford
Victoria Bridge is a foot bridge opened in 1898 to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria
The city is scenic, with plenty of surrounding countryside to explore
Another place to visit is Berrington Hall which is one of Henry Hollands first houses. You can explore the family rooms and walk in the servants footsteps down the back stairs, moving around the house unseen by the family and guests.
One visitor on Tripadvisor said: Had a lovely day out at Berrington Hall. Incredibly interesting house with a fascinating history explained clearly on the various displays throughout. Super friendly and knowledgeable guides. Reasonably priced cafe with good food.
